Euclidean Mathematics Competition

The Euclid Competition is taken by more than 20,000 students worldwide each year, offering high school students an opportunity to use all the knowledge and creativity they have gained from secondary school mathematics to solve new problems.

Thanks to the University of Waterloo’s reputation in mathematics and the rigor and professionalism of the Euclid’s assessment standards, the competition has become an important reference for Canadian, British, and American universities when evaluating international students’ mathematical ability, admission eligibility, and scholarship awards.

Why participate in the Euclid Mathematics Competition?

The Euclid Mathematics Competition is a high school mathematics competition organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Waterloo in Canada. It is one of Canada’s most prestigious and widely recognized mathematics competitions. First held in the 1970s, the Euclid has grown in recent years to attract more than 20,000 students from 2,000 schools annually, including approximately 8,000 international participants—with Chinese students making up the largest group.

The exam originated from the mathematics competitions organized by the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. Students who rank in the top 25% receive a Certificate of Distinction issued by the university. For students planning to apply to the University of Waterloo’s undergraduate programs, participation is highly recommended.

It clearly states: You are strongly encouraged to participate in the Euclid Mathematics Competition or the Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest (CSMC), as the Faculty will use your contest results to help determine your admission to the University of Waterloo and even your eligibility for entrance scholarships.

So, if you are applying to other top international universities, is the Euclid also recognized?

The answer is yes. The University of Waterloo itself is world-renowned for its strengths in mathematics and computer-related fields. Over the past two decades, the results of the Euclid Mathematics Competition have become a “passport” for admission to science and engineering programs at major universities in North America. A strong performance in the Euclid will definitely be a standout feature on your application and significantly boost your chances of acceptance.

Euclid Mathematics Competition Compiled Lecture Notes — Updated and Released!

The Euclid is one of the most influential competitions worldwide, second only to the AMC series. Once students have built a solid foundation in competition math, it becomes much easier to participate and perform well. As more and more students join the Euclid each year, the demand for targeted, professional competition materials has also grown significantly.

To help students prepare more efficiently with focused resources, we have developed this set of lecture notes. The notes categorize problems by topic based on the Euclid’s historical syllabus and organize them by difficulty level, providing a rich and comprehensive collection of practice questions.

Competition Preparation Resources

The Euclid exam covers functions, geometry, sequences, combinatorics, and algebra. The problems are not limited to basic knowledge; instead, they emphasize the development of thinking skills. Therefore, the exam assesses not only students’ mastery of mathematical concepts but also their ability to solve problems.

For students, practicing with past competitions is an excellent way to become familiar with the style of questions and common topics that appear on the Euclid. Students can also prepare by reviewing our Grade 12 public course materials. We also offer specialized preparation resources designed specifically for the Euclid Competition.
